WORKSTATIONS SECURITY
The security of workstations is today problems which consists of several parameters and that returns the complex the task by definition:
- Test and deployment of patchs of security (operating system and applications) - Protection at different levels by devoted coats (personal FW, antivirus, control of the USB ports…) - Data backup The virtualisation of workstations allows to define models which contain at the same time an operating system and one or several applications. The system duplicates the model dynamically to create the virtual PCs according to needs. Evolutions (updating and corrective) of applications or operating system are only to apply to models. The notion of deployment / télédistribution does not exist any more since operation is performed in a transparent manner in the creation of a virtual PC. If a model evolved, all virtual PCS which refer to it will then be concerned automatically. They can therefore guarantee a level of homogeneous security. The virtualisation of workstations allows to define non-persistent virtual PCSs which find their state of origin (ie the model to which they are linked) in every reboot (that the manager can program at regular intervals). It becomes therefore possible to give « a new post every morning » to all the users. What will by definition have the effect of guaranteeing the security of workstations and applications, since all installations of unwanted applications or other viruses will have disappeared. The model is secured since it is active only during the stages of updating, which is in general short in time. The virtualisation of workstations allows to define precisely the characteristics of a virtual PC. The manager is therefore free to give a local disc (C:) restrained to the users to encourage them to use the areas of stocking 'mutualisés,' which are centralized. Security and restrictions linked to different legislation are by definition simpler to accomplish (maintenance, filtration, marking). |
